Internal control and compliance is the key to tackling a growing wave of white-collar crime in the workplace.

More than half (55%) of companies interviewed for Ernst & Young's 8th global survey, ‘Fraud: The Unmanaged Risk’ said they had suffered a significant incident in the past year. Nearly half were frauds of more than US$100,000 and 13% exceeded US$1 million.

The fact is fraudsters are very adept at covering their tracks and companies often experience quite substantial losses before suspecting anything is amiss. It's estimated the average fraud scheme has a life span of 18 months before it is detected.

Moreover, in fluid job markets, companies are finding that ex-employees and contractors are increasingly among those involved in computer and telephone hacking activities, embezzlement, or the misuse of confidential information. More worrisome still, Ernst & Young's 2003 survey found that company managers were the biggest offenders, committing 55% of frauds - with fully 85% of these managers in post for less than a year.
